Today Hā‘ena has to move forward, working with the legacy of its past and with the circumstances of the present. Here on the far edge of the Hawaiian archipelago, community members have regrouped and formed a new land-caretaking organization that in many ways reflects the legacy of the previous Hui Kū‘ai ‘Āina.

In this chapter, we will hear from our guides about how this new organization is moving forward to restore a Hawaiian landscape—a landscape that embodies the spirit and functions of the ahupua‘a to the extent that can be accomplished under the present system of land ownership. It is these efforts, perhaps more than anything, that make Hā‘ena worthy of consideration by the people of Hawai‘i today. We invite you to learn about these new efforts, and to place them within the context of Hā‘ena's past—ancient and recent.

In honor of the vital onward movement these efforts represent, we have chosen a petroglyph of a surfer to represent this chapter.

Land Today
In the Changes chapter we saw how outsiders came to exert a transformative influence on the landscape of Hā‘ena, bringing about the breakup of the Hui. This section looks at how social economics have literally changed the face of Hā‘ena.

Sea Today
Because so much of it remains State owned, Hā‘ena presents an excellent opportunity for community members to work with State offices to bring the land back into use in a modern version of the ahupua‘a format.

Re-Planting
Members of the community discuss educational programs, community mapping efforts, lawai‘a camp, and other approaches and obstacles to perpetuating cultural knowledge and values.

Sacred Sites
The sacred sites of Hā‘ena remain a focus of ongoing efforts to restore the ahupua‘a as a cohesive and unified entity. Carlos discusses how the new Hui hopes to manage these sites in a more culturally appropriate and effective manner.
